A new friend shows up at my door

A new friend shows up at my door.

So I am cooking dinner and outside my window I hear a crazy crying noise. I look out my kitchen window and see a puppy in the corner making the noise. Now the neighbor’s dog just had several puppies that were running around and I saw several of them. In fact, I saw this one that is now sitting on my door step earlier in the week curled in ball sleeping along the road. When I walked past it a day or two before and it didn’t look healthy.

And it still didn’t look very healthy.

Now I had a dog when I was a kid and have not had one since, I fact I am not an anti dog person at all, but I have been very anti getting a dog person. My life didn’t allow for it. And was planning on continuing that trend here in Swaziland.

Well, they say sometimes the dogs pick you.

So I walked out on my porch and happened to have BREAD in my hand and tossed it to the puppy.
Now dogs in Swaziland are everywhere, most homesteads have one or two or more but they are generally not pets. They are alarm systems, since they are generally small and skinny they aren’t guard dogs per say. In fact most dogs in Swaziland don’t like me, I think it is cause I am white and they have never seen a white person, so I am a stranger, which is pretty much true. And the defense against a dog attack is throw a rock at it or just bend down and act like your picking up a rock and many run from that motion.

Plus, rabies and their general condition which is pretty poor and they aren’t cute either. So needless to say my “I am not getting dog policy” is in place.

But this little guy, who is a mutt has Rottweiler type black and brown spots/stripes and is tiny and thin and obviously not well. And he is really tiny, he basically fits in the palm of my both hands, his brothers and sisters are already bigger.

So he eats the bread right up, I throw him some more he eats it up. I go back in to check on the sausage I am making and grab another piece of bread. This time I basically hand it to him. I go back in finish my cooking and look outside he is still hanging around. It is a nice weather evening out so I go sit on my porch, it is dark out and no one is around. And have dinner with a new friend, Of course he got some of sausage. And when he basically walks between my legs and sat down and laid his head on my leg, I knew it was over.

So I picked him up, filthy with bugs all over him, gave him more sausage, brought him into my bathroom, which by the way has busted up tiles (before me), is still unfinished paint job (all me) and generally isn’t a place I hang out in. So he fit perfect in there. This is not a puppy that plays it seems to have very little energy and is very gentle. I gave him a sheet to sleep on he curled up with full belly and slept the night away.

He went to bed maybe at 9 I went at 11, I checked on him before going to sleep, same position.
So I woke the next morning with a puppy in my place, who was still sleeping in the exact same spot. It was 630 am.

  1. That is how Smokey cat adopted us. A kitten when we just moved in - very scared - wouldn't enter the house, then later would only be in one room - now after 14 years, he sleeps with us (actually getting between Louise and I and bed). Enjoy! Charlie
