So we had 6 game season ending tournament schedule for the kids of Nelson Mandela Sports league, I have been running this league with the help of the Youth Mentor based out of our office.
For the last 3 weeks I have brought in other PCV's to give "conversations" which is basically talking about like skills such as leadership, responsibility, commitment, decision making and on the this last day we had the Anti Crime Unit come and give a presentation.
All of the kids had a great time, I referee 5 of the games (the 8am game had a no show so it wasn't played) Three of the games including the final went into penalty kicks so the on field play was exciting and competitive.
We feed them and gave out a Participation Certificate which I created and printed out on colored paper. The awards ceremony is when the trophies that were supposed to given out on the day come in. So who knows when that will be. I am trying to tie in the awards ceremony with the movies that are screened at the local casino's theater. Not one of these kids have ever seen a movie in a theater. (Although the movie are projected from a laptop, but it still feels like a real theater.)
By the end of the day I was exhausted and then had to haul a bunch of crap home up my steep hill I walk everyday. On Sunday, I was so sore I layed in bed for most of the day just relaxing.
Most of the other PCV's get to do this on a weekly basis. A complete day off with no work, coaching or other responsibilities is very rare for me. And it was a welcome rest.
Starting on June 24th, 2010 I departing from Los Angeles to Swaziland in Africa to begin my journey through the US Peace Corps. On Aug 23rd, I became an official PCV. The rest of what you read here is my adventure and job helping fight HIV AIDS for the next two years. As of Sept 25th, 2012 this blog is completes with 2 years of service. Hope you enjoy it.
