Bread RIP

So after allowing Bread to sleep in my bed for the first and only time, I carried her into the bathroom so she could do her business, which now is a unbalanced ordeal. Its 7:00AM, I have to make a decision, so I take her back to bed where she promptly falls asleep again. I text in saying I wont be there are 8am but at 1030 for the Peace Corp/Swazi boss meeting happening in my office.

So laying there I realized she can probably still fit in the bag I carried her to the vet before in, she does but with much less room then before. I get there and have to wait she starts making noises like she is uncomfortable laying the bag. She basically is showing all kinds of signs of internal troubles.

The vet takes one look at her with her crazy eyes and noise making and looks at me. I say she needs to put to sleep, he pulls out the needle. 10 minutes later Bread is asleep and at peace, no more spinning. The vet thinks it was rabies or a nervous system failure, some the signs he saw were NOT distemper. But he couldn’t completely rule it out.

The time is now 1015, I pay and run out thanking him. He really is a wonderful Vet in a country where animals have nowhere near the attention they get in the US. But cattle are literally used as a measure of a persons wealth. In fact, a man has to pay “ebola” to the wives family, which is 13 cows or whatever they negotiate.

Her body is going to be examined for rabies and help the city of Nhlangano learn about an outbreak, if that really is the case. He said they don’t get to many animals brought in they can know the history of like her, plus she was in good condition, lots of times the carcasses are already rotting .

Frankly, after 5 days of watching her fail, I believe it was relief especially cause of her vision problems.

I will miss her.

  1. Louise and I empathize with you about the fast decline of Bread. We lost our Smokey cat the same way - except he was over 13 years old. All of a sudden he was having problems breathing and not eating. Our prayers are with you.
